Though we are yet to independently confirm whether or not former vice president Alhaji Chief Samuel San Sumana did leave the shores of Sierra Leone on-board a Ghana Airways flight, we are confident that his leaving the country does not pose any security threat and with good reason too.
In the first place, there had been no report that Sam Sumana had his traveling documents seized, because if that had been the case, then his travel outside of the country would not have been possible.
Therefore, it is reasonable to suggest that his travel out of Sierra Leone could not have been with any intention other than genuine.
In the second place, let us assume for a second that Sam Sumana clandestinely left Sierra Leone.
If this is the case, which we hope it is not, then there would be questions asked as to what his intentions or motives were for sneaking out of the country.
Though Sam Sumana could have some streak of violence in him, many people do not see him as a potential leader of an armed rebel group seeking to revenge for his sacking.
THE TRUMPET is of the view that the Sam Sumana is being hyped more than it should because there are elements among us who believe that by hyping the issue they would succeed at turning the focus on others while they busy themselves in corrupt activities and in other acts aimed at fleecing the nation.
It is a fact that whenever something big is being planned by the APC, that would be the time APC detractors work overtime to cause the government to lose focus or concentration.
It could be true that Sam Sumana left the country last Thursday onboard a Ghana Airways flight as reported by a few local newspapers.
It should be understood that Sam Sumana has a right to travel like any other Sierra Leoneans as long as he is ordered or prohibited by the court not to leave the jurisdiction; and in such event, travel documents are confiscated by the State until such a time they are handed over again if need be.
Besides, Sam Sumana had a matter before the court not as a defendant but as a litigant and so; he (Sam Sumana) need not sneak away from Sierra Leone because his documents were never taken from him in the first place.
It should be understood that Sam Sumana is no longer vice president, having been stripped of everything even a pension.
Had be resigned or retired the story would have been different and he would be accorded vice president treatment until death, much the same way former Vice President Solomon Ekuma Berewa is enjoying VP status in his retirement, a privilege accorded by the State.
So let people not begin to pass around rumor as if the former vice president Sam Sumana has a hidden agenda for leaving the shores of Sierra Leone.
Why should he when it is clear he is not even liked by his own Kono people? THE TRUMPET can state without any hesitation that Sam Sumana’s departure of his native land should not be taken as having a hidden motive or agenda because the notion is simply absurd.
In anyway, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and Sierra leone Police (SLP) together with all other national security players can and are capable of defending this nation against anyone who believes and attempts to usurp power through undemocratic means. Any such attempt shall be repelled with maximum and conclusive consequence.
Therefore, let no one try, least of all Sam Sumana.
This is our position!
