It is accepted that in the history on sports in Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma’s regime has spent the highest money on sports than any other previous governments.
This has seen sports fans commending the President. Beside the above, he has recently approved Le500M for two days Sports Conference.
Because of his love for Sports, he decided to let Sports be a Ministry on its own but the question on the lips of many is if this big spending will yield any dividend to the sports?
The fans asked because they said they are not seeing much development rather all they are seeing is confusion.
In all the big spending, football is getting the lion share of the money. The fans said they have nothing against football getting the bigger share as 90% love football but that they want to see development in the game.
Since Isha Johansen took over power from Nahim Kadie, there has been nothing much good to talk about than the negative things happening in football.
They though accepted that the Madam has done some development but failing to organize constructive local league over three years according to the fans is disastrous.
Few months back, President Ernest Bai Koroma in Makeni outlined some of the key things that are leading to the confusion in football and sports in general.
Among them, the fans said are selfishness and greed. After his statement, the President ordered his Sports Minister Ahmed Khanou to go all out to see that peace returns to football.
But the fans categorically stated that it will be hard for peace to prevail in football and sports in general as the Sports Ministry has always refused to be independent.
The fracas in footbal according to the fans started when the then Sports Minister Paul Kamara decided to support one candidate against the others.
This and other behaviors of Paul forced President Koroma to sack Paul Kamara and bring in Ahmed Khanou from Lands Ministry to the Sports Ministry.
The coming of Ahmed Khanou was well received by fans as they hope that he will change the system but to the disappointment of the fans Ahmed’s regime is worst than Paul Kamara.
The fans went on that under Ahmed Khanou fracas which was in football has spread like a virus to other sports with the sport minister backing one side as agains others.
The fans went on that under the regime of Ahmed Khanou Athletics and Cycling are with two executive bodies respectively.
Both have one executive recognized by the Sports Ministry and the other recognized by their international bodies.
This, the fans said they have never seen in the history of Sierra Leone’s Sports .
On the side of Cycling their international body recently told them to verify their delegates to be signed by the President and the Secretary and do another election in 90 days.
But sources reaching SALONE TIMES Sports stated that Sports Council has advised their recognized Cycling executive not to go by what the international body is requesting.
For Athletics, the candidate who contested against the incumbent was disqualified for being a government Minister which made the incumbent President, Abdul Karim Sesay to go unopposed.
Fans told SALONE TIMES Sports that when Ahmed took up office he ordered the Athletics body to conduct another election even though Karim’s executive was recognized by the International Athletics Body.
Beside all this, the National Olympics Committee is presently in court with the Sports Ministry approved Cycling and Athletics executives.
This is worrying for the fans as up to 18 sports under NOC should now be preparing for the Commonwealth games next year than spending monies on lawyers to defend them in court.
They said the Sports Minister Ahmed only work with his Deputy Director of Sports and hardly hang heads with his Deputy Sports Minister and the Director of Sports.
The Sports Ministry is planning to organize Sports conference on the 19-20 May 2017 for which they have requested Le500M.
According to the fans, the conference will be meaningless without peace prevailing in the various sports.
They appealed to President Koroma to send a wake up message to the Sports Ministry
