The politics of tribe and race have no place in this day and age except for places like Sierra Leone where the issue of ethnicity and regionalism become issues only when there are elections.
No sooner the ruling All People Congress (APC) announced their Presidential Candidate and Running Mate for the March 2018 elections, than we started hearing that Chericoco is not a citizen of Sierra Leone and that he was born in neighboring Guinea and later grew up in Sierra Leone.
Like the Obama situation in the United States of America (USA) wherein nobody questioned Obama’s citizenship when he was senator but started questioning him when he became president, so it is with Chericoco’s situation.
The questions about Cheircoco’s Sierra Leoneaness did not come when he was elected as Member of Parliament in Constituency 110 in Freetown in 2007 and 2012
It did not come when he rose to the level of Deputy Speaker who also doubled as Chairman of the Public Account Committee.
Well, from what I know about Chernoh Maju Bah he was born and bred in Freetown Sierra Leone and grew up around Krootown Road, Berwick Street and St. John. He went to Bathurst Street and Samaria Primary Schools before proceeding to St Edwards Secondary School at Kingtom.
I know he was close to the kroo people to the point that was dubbed Tapeh by them.
I believe we should be thinking about what Chericoco has done as a Member of Parliament in his constituency which covered Wilberforce, Tengbeh Town and Part of Hill Station. People that I have spoken to especially those in Wilberforce and Tengbeh Town will tell you that Chericoco did little or nothing for them as a Member of Parliament.
People should also discuss his role in Parliament as Chairman of the Mines Committee when Sierra Leone has the second highest deposit of Iron Ore for which the people have not seen any benefit.
He was the chairman of the committee when Sierra Leone ratified some of the worst mining agreements in the world with both African Mineral and London Mining respectively for which the country benefitted little.
The discussion should also revolve around his role as Deputy Speaker with the responsibility as Chairman of the Public Account Committee for which billions of Leones have gone unchecked.
Recently SALONE TIMES raised the issue in the 2015 Audit report in which the Auditor General blamed Chericoco’s Public Account Committee for the unaccounted billions of Leones- for this SALONE TIMES was taken to the Independent Media Commission (IMC).
We should forget about tribe, when we are taking about who should run the lives of the people rather we should look careful on his track record and character.
