The young people of the ruling All People Congress convened in the backward district of Port Loko last weekend where they discuss the theme, “ Inclusion of Young People In Governance: A promise Fulfilled!”
Whether indeed tackling the problems of the young people in this country is by giving jobs to few cronies is a topic for another day as one will want to focus on some of the statements made by President Koroma when he gave the keynote address.
Koroma started his speech by congratulating the young people of his party for organizing a wonderful congress like the one they did in Port Loko and then started talking about politics.
Koroma said that the APC is in serious transition that they are just facing for the second time in the history of their party. Koroma said that the transition is very crucial for the survival of the party in power.
Indeed Koroma is very right to have said that his party is at a cross because the difference between this transition and Siaka Steven’s transition is the fact that the Steven’s transition happened when Sierra Leone was in a dictatorship so he could have gotten away with his handpicked candidate who will not happened now.
Any attempt to deny the APC the opportunity of having free and fair process of getting their flag bearer will break the APC. As a result of this, he added that the party will select an electable candidate which is up to them (APC).
In view of this, Koroma compared the process of electing the Roman Catholic Pope to the process of getting flagbearer of their party.
He said when they want to get their flagbearer, they will go into a room and all what people will hear is the APC victory song.
As if the APC is a secret society, the President actually presented a picture of the APC being a party that does not have any respect for democratic principles which was recently exhibited when two chairmen of the party were dismissed just because they expressed interest in succeeding President Koroma.
Koroma even asked if some of those now clamoring to be flagbearer of the party were popular before 2007 and if they know that they are popular, let them go and form their own party.
This statement was aim at dissuading some of those who have expressed interest in becoming the leader of the party so that the preferred choice of Koroma will have an easy ride.
Why didn’t he say so in 2007 when he wanted everyone in his party to win the election? Why didn’t he say so in 2012 when he wanted victory for his second and final term? Now that he is asking them out, instead of encouraging them to stay in the party could be interpreted as selfishness-because it is not him (Koroma), he doesn’t even mind if the party is together.
As if the President is the SUPREME BIENG, he said that regime change will not work and that regime change does not meant for Sierra Leone but a western concept.
This statement is very ridiculous because the President should know that regime change is not a western concept but something that is in the hands of the people.
When the people wanted regime change in 2007 because the SLPP did not live up to their expectations, no one dictated to them, but they came out in their numbers to vote them out. The President should know that like any other Sierra Leonean, he is entitled to just a single vote.
Like the agama lizard, President Koroma praised himself and said that since independence no President has worked more than he has done.
I don’t believe the President should praise himself rather he should allow others to praise him because we all know what he has and has not done. So he should allow the people to Praise him.
